How to Upload MMPKs for Field Users

Purpose/Overview

This article explains how to upload Mobile Map Package (MMPK) files for offline mapping. It provides step-by-step guidance to help you package your maps and data for use in the field, even when a network connection isn’t available.

To access this feature: Utilisphere > System Management > Administration > General > Offline Mapping

Key Benefits/Use Cases:

  • Offline access: View maps, basemaps, and data layers, and perform tasks like routing or geocoding — all without an internet connection.
  • Mobile-friendly: Designed to perform well on mobile devices.

Things to Know:

  • Permissions: Only users with admin-level access can upload MMPK files to Utilisphere.
  • Important: MMPK files are created using external GIS mapping tools (outside of Irth) by adding basemaps and feature layers to a project, configuring pop-ups and labels if needed, and then packaging the map for upload. For help creating MMPK files, contact the provider of the GIS software your company uses.
  • Avoid Errors: MMPK files must not include an attribute table, or an error will occur during upload to Utilisphere.

How It Works:

An MMPK (Mobile Map Package) is a single file that bundles together maps and their data, designed for use offline. Think of it as a pre-packaged map that you can interact with even when you don’t have internet access. MMPKs are ideal for fieldwork in areas without connectivity.

Once you have created an MMPK file using external GIS software, you can upload it for use in the Irth mobile app.

  1. Go to System Management > Administration > General > Offline Mapping.

  2. Click Create New Offline Mapping in the top right corner of the screen to set up a new map. Fill in the information for the new offline map.

  3. Fill in the information for the new offline map and then select the Save & Activate button.
  4. Select the recently saved offline mapping, or choose an existing one by clicking its name in the Name column to modify and upload it.

  5.  Click Upload MMPK on the top right side of the screen.

  6. Click Select, browse your computer to find the .mmpk file, and select Open.

  7. Click Upload.

  8. Choose Save & Activate.
