Creating new Quizzes and Surveys

Modified on Mon, Oct 23, 2023 at 12:29 PM

Quizzes and Surveys are the types of assessment used in Coursettra when attempting to quiz or gather feedback from students.   The Quiz/Survey item is the container that you'll use to organize and deliver the questions you have selected from your database of questions.   (If you haven't added any of your question into the system, you'll want to do that first!   You can only add existing questions to your quiz or survey, you cannot create new questions as part of your quiz/survey creation process)

Create new Quiz (or Survey) by completing the following steps:

  1. Start from the Main Menu > Tools tab
  2. Select either Quiz or Survey
  3. Select the '+ Create' option from the top of the page
  4. Enter the name of your Quiz or Survey
  5. Click the Save option to create your new item

Once created, proceed by filling in the following sections of your new Quiz or Survey.

Instructions:  When students select to take a quiz or survey, they are presented with the information entered here alongside the options to 'Start' or 'Retake' the exam.  Instructions are an opportunity for you to provide the student with any guidance, rules, or information you wish them to receive prior to beginning.    Example instruction could include information such as:

  • Are students expected to guess at unknown answers, or take time to lookup the correct information?
  • What should a student expect if they fail the exam?
  • What is the nature of the exam?
  • If this is an in-person exam, any information you wish to share about interacting with the instructor such as raising their hand to ask for clarification of a question, or exiting the room quietly if they need to use the restroom

Layout: The layout section represents the question and/or text that will be presented to the learner.  The quiz/survey layout is made up of the following components:

Page Break:  By default your exam starts with 1 page.   While there is no limit to the number of question you can add to a page, should you desire to divide your exam into multiple groups, you can do-so by adding additional pages.     By default, the point value you give to each page is equally divided amongst the questions added to that page.  Thus, if you wish to give a higher value to some questions versus others, dividing them by page is an easy way to accommodate that.   Otherwise, pages are mostly just an organizational tool for a system admin when creating an exam.   Students will receive questions in order regardless of the pages you have established.

To insert a new page:

  1. Verify the layout section of your quizn is in edit mode
  2. Select the options menu by hovering over the Page Break text that appears under your first page
  3. Select to insert a new page break

To adjust scoring information for your page:

  1. Verify the layout section of your examination is in edit mode
  2. Select the options menu by hovering over the Page Break text that appears under your first page
  3. Select to edit page settings
  4. Adjust scoring information as desired.

Question:  Add the questions you would like to deliver on this exam/eval from the pool of questions that have already been added to the system.   (If you have not already added your questions, you'll need to click on the questions tab of your main Quiz or Survey list, and select to '+ create' a new item.  Make sure you set your questions to an Approved state once entered so they will be available to add to the quiz or survey you are currently creating.

Text Box:   Text boxes are simply a box of text you can insert between questions to communicate information to students.   They are meant to allow you the ability to insert some guidance or information for a following group of questions that might not otherwise be indicated on the question item itself.    Examples:  Reference the following image when answering the following 5 questions:  **insert your image**

To insert a new text box:

  1. Verify the layout section of your examination is in edit mode
  2. Select the options menu for the page, or the "+" symbol for the question that precedes where you wish to insert your text
  3. Select the insert text option
  4. Configure your text box using the WYSIWYG text editor control

Question Pool:  Question pools provide the ability to present randomly selected questions to a student.

To insert a Question Pool:

  1. Verify the layout section of your examination is in edit mode
  2. Select the options menu for the page, or the "+" symbol for the question that precedes where you wish to insert your text
  3. Indicate the number of questions that should be administered from your pool of questions
  4. Indicate whether questions should be required or optional
  5. Indicate the available pool of questions from which the exam should draw

Things to note about question pools:

  • Questions from your pool will be administered to student in random order
  • If students are permitted to retake an examination, the system will randomly select unseen questions for that student until all questions have been taken, then repeat
  • All questions from within a pool will be scored of equal value

Once all information is complete and you are ready to make your examination available for use, set your examination to an approved' state.
